Golden Disc
This is a handcrafted piece made on the lathe. The resin burl disc sits nicely on a maple burl stand.
The disc has a diameter of 6 inches and a width of 1.5 inches.
The stand is 5 x4 with a height of 1.5 inches.
There are many different process in making this product. This sculpture is made from two parts, Maple burl and epoxy resin, coloured with sunset yellow ink. A Mould is made and then the moulding, which consists of the maple burl and the coloured epoxy resin is then set in place. While the resin is curing, it is put in a vacuum chamber and a pump is used to remove most of the bubbles that remain in the resin.
The centre lathe is used to shape the product and then sand paper starting from 80 grit and finishing on 3000 grit is used to give it a smooth finish. To finish wax is used and it is then buffed to make it super shiny.
With all my resin products there may be tiny bubbles and tiny cracks due to the hardening process. I personally think that this adds character.
This product looks great when the sun is shining through it, or in front of a white background.
This is one of my favorite pieces.
Enjoy.
